Bengaluru/Bhubaneswar, August 30: Former Chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority and co-founder of IT company Mindtree, Subroto Bagchi, has been appointed Chairman of the newly constituted Skill Development Vision Group by the Karnataka Government.
The group will guide the Karnataka Government in implementing the state’s Skill Development Policy 2025–32, particularly in creating a skilled human resource base for future industries and improving the overall skill-development ecosystem.
Reacting to the appointment, Bagchi said that humanity is currently at a major turning point, with people across the world concerned about the future of work. He said Karnataka has an opportunity to prepare its young population for the future and expressed confidence that the state’s youth would write a new chapter in skill development.
In a post on X, Bagchi described his appointment as an honour and a matter of happiness. He had earlier served as Chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority, having been appointed by then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on May 1, 2016. He was accorded Cabinet rank and reportedly drew a salary of just ₹1 per month.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Odisha Government also appointed Bagchi as its chief spokesperson. He is widely known for his philanthropic activities. He donated ₹340 crore towards establishing the Sri Shankara Cancer Centre and Research Institute in Bhubaneswar, ₹212.5 crore for an 800-bed multispeciality hospital at IISc Bengaluru, and ₹55 crore for the Bagchi School of Public Health at Ahmedabad University.
