Vespa-maker plans to launch a new electric scooter for Indian market

The automobile market is India has seen significant numbers of new Electric Vehicles (EV) from numerous EV manufacturing startups and established auto brands. The two-wheeler EVs have gained popularity much faster than the four-wheelers.

So keeping in mind, its future potential many companies have started introducing the electric versions of their two-wheelers. Now, a new report have suggested that Piaggio, whose subsidiary brands is Vespa, is planning to enter the EV market in India. As per a recent report, the Italian automaker is planning to develop an electric scooter specifically for the Indian market.

Piaggio currently manufactures three-wheelers in the country but it also produces two-wheelers through its subsidiary brands- Vespa and Aprilia. The upcoming made for India electric scooter is expected to be launched under both brands Vespa and Aprilia.

Vespa electric scooter made for India market from Piaggio

Diego Graffi, the managing director of Piaggio India, has hinted that the company is planning to establish an EV ecosystem in India that will sustain even without subsidies, reported ET Auto. Let us tell you that Central Government provides FAME II subsidies and various state governments across the country also provides subsidies that cuts the price of the EVs by up to 40 percent.

However, it seems the two-wheeler manufacturer does not have any plans to roll out the EV anytime soon and it may take some time before the Piaggio’s first electric two-wheeler will arrive in India. According to Graffi, the supplier ecosystem in India is unprepared to support a massive transition to electric mobility.

Expected Launch Time

Piaggio is expected to take around 18-24 months for development and testing of India-specific model. So, the EV will be announced in the Indian market after the development and testing is done. The upcoming electric scooter from Piaggio is unlikely to make its India debut before the end of 2023.

Piaggio will solely focus on developing electric scooters for the Indian market and not motorcycles, said reports of Rushlane. So the electric scooter will likely be retailed under the Vespa brand.

The e-scooter from Piaggio will have the latest connectivity features seen in modern EVs and the price of the EV will likely be in the same range as per the existing EVs in the Indian market.

The company is already offering electric scooters in developed markets of Europe. The company revealed the first electric scooter under its own brand named ‘One’ last year. It also showcased Elettrica electric scooter in India at the Auto Expo 2020.

Currently, the two-wheeler EV space in India has several EVs such as Ather 450, Ola S1 series, Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube.
