No actors no crew, priest makes Kannada’s first AI film just in 6 months

Meet Narasimha Murthy, a Karnataka priest who’s turned the Kannada film world on its head with his new-style filmmaking. Along with the assistance of AI technician Nuthan, a one-time graphic designer turned tech professional, Murthy produced Sandalwood’s first AI-powered film, “Love You”. This 95-minute Kannada film cost just ₹10 lakh and was completed in six months.

The pair employed 30 various AI tools to create everything from the cast to the soundtrack and visuals, including breathtaking drone shots. Murthy wrote the lyrics and dialogues, while the rest was created by AI. The movie features 12 original songs and has been certified U/A by the Central Board of Film Certification. While Murthy is quick to call it a pioneer, “Love You” is not the world’s first AI-made movie – that distinction goes to “Where The Robots Grow,” which came out in 2024.

The CBFC, says Murthy, was taken aback by the film’s ambition and originality, albeit critiquing some of the character feature inconsistencies and lip-syncing problems. Emotional expression was a tough task, but the board’s observation was generally encouraging. If they did the film again today, Nuthan feels, it would be ten times better because of the incredible pace of AI advancement. The equipment they had is already six months old, and the ones they have now are much better.

Murthy is already developing two more AI-based projects – one on the founder of Bengaluru, Kempe Gowda, and another on historical personality Immadi Pulikeshi. His intention is to project “Love You” on a single screen to create a record, highlighting the capabilities of AI in filmmaking. With innovation and creativity guiding his projects, Murthy is breaking the boundaries of what can be achieved in the film industry.
