Bhubaneswar, : The court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) here on Monday awarded two years and three months imprisonment to a doctor after convicting her in a case of sex determination.
The court awarded 27 months imprisonment to Rajkishore Sahoo for his alleged involvement in prenatal sex determination case in 2012 in Unit II.
The JMFC court last month had also awarded 30 months imprisonment to Dr Nabanita Padhi for her alleged involvement in prenatal sex determination case in August 2019 at her clinic in Jaydev Vihar.
Illegal sex determination in the state capital has remained as a major concern. As per the census in 2011, Bhubaneswar, the capital city has the lowest sex ratio among the 10 cities in the state with a population of more than one lakh. Bhubaneswar was placed in the bottom 882 females per 1000 males where as Cuttack topped the list with 997 females per 1000 males. The contrasting part was that Bhubaneswar fared badly in sex ratio despite the city having the highest literacy rate among the 10 cities of the state.
Similarly, the decrease of child ratio of the city in the last decade has also been a major concern for the government. The sex ratio of the city in the age group 0-6 years had decreased to 902 from 912 in 2001 census.
