Jagatsinghpur: Tensio n prevailed in the Haveli village of Jagatsinghpur district’s Palli panchayat after a faceoff reportedly erupted between the villagers and the local police on Thursday night.
The villagers have also allegedly damaged the police van while five persons from each party were injured during the scuffle.
Following the incident, the villagers detained the police van and held a protest throughout the night.
According to sources, the villagers said that a few police personnel came to the village on Thursday late at night and offered the villagers money before asking them to vote for a specific party in the panchayat polls. However, after the villagers turned the offer down, the police personnel started cursing and beating the villagers.
The villagers also alleged that the police mobile van was carrying liquor bottles and posters of a political party.
On the other side, the police have refused the allegations and have said that they had gone into the village after being informed about some people organising a feast in the late night, a day ahead of the panchayat polls in the area.
In a counter allegation, the police also said that the villagers who organised the feast attacked the police officials and damaged the police van.
